Last Character Slot! What Class Should It Be?
Hello. So far, I have a Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist, Monk, Necromancer, Assassin, and a Dervish. I have one character slot left, and I'm not planning to buy another. I want a mainly PvE class that would ocassionaly PvP. What class would you suggest out of Mesmer, Ritualist, or Paragon?
Mesmer - Does exceedingly well in PvP, not much use in PvE. Many people say it is their favorite class to play because of interrupts, hexes, and craploads of tricky damage. Paragon - Recently got nerfed to hell. The idea of throwing spears is alluring. Shouts and echoes sound a bit boring, but is an overall good support character with decent damage output. Ritualist - First of all, their armor is creepy in a good way. They are the masters of spirits. Can heal, deal damage, or support. Murderous in PvP with spirits up. I don't know about PvE though, since spirits have long recharges. I don't know why, but I am leaning towards the Mesmer. If you have any or all of these classes and know about them, please give me opinions. I know I can just try then delete, but I was wondering what people here think. Thanks. ~Polynikes Last edited by Polynikes of Sparta; Mar 23, 2007 at 08:06 PM // 20:06.. |

Here is my thoughts...
When deciding on your last slot, you said you would want to occassionally do PvP with that toon. That pretty much strikes the Paragon out, as with the most recent nerfs, he is rarely if ever seen much in high end PvP anymore. Additionally, despite how much i love how my paragon looks, she is honestly boring to play in PvE. That leaves Mesmer and Ritualist. Imho, both have equal uses in both PvE and PvP. The mesmer is VERY beneficial to a group in PvE areas where you know specific bosses will need shutdown, specific casters are common and overal enemy control is needed. In PvP, player interrupts seem to be in a decline due to the predominate usage of 1 second caste skills or faster. However, they still play a heavy roll such as hex spamming, degen, skill diversion, energy draining, etc etc... A Ritualist is also useful in both realms. A Ritualist does GREAT in PvE. You are wrong to say spirits have a long caste time...due to the fact that any self-respecting spirit spammer is a Ritual Lord user. This affectively makes it so that they can almost ALWAYS have at least one spirit up. I find my ritualist extremely fun to play in PvE because, despite what many say, they can fill many rolls. As you have highlighted, they can heal, utilize spike dmg (channeling), weapon spell builds both defensive and offensive aimed, defensive spirit spamming AND offensive spirit spamming, etc etc... PvP, they are sadly mainly relegated to JUST spirit spamming. Every now and then you see the Channeling spike builds, but more often then not, they have been classified in the one PvP roll. However, i feel their rolls in PvE can definitly be carried over to PvP in some form... That all said, i think it comes down to those two choices. Both professions are of my favorite to play, but both have hard times with finding pugs that accept them. When it comes to overal usability in both PvP and PvE realms, it is kind of a toss-up, and i would personally just buy another character slot so i could play both! LOL!! GL on deciding... i hope my views helped a bit! cheers. Last edited by Batou of Nine; Mar 23, 2007 at 08:22 PM // 20:22.. |

tyvm, i was between rit and mes too, unless soneone really convinved me of paragon. only thing is mesmer has a not-so-good primary attribute. fast casting seems so... insignificant compared to other things like soul reaping or divine favor, etc. i like rit armor better, except i have close to zero knowledge bout them. thx again, any more opinions?

I think that you're dead wrong on paragorns...
they're an excellent class both offensively and defensively. on the offensive they can spam conditions, especially deep wound and daze relatively easily and their spears can do some pretty good damage. and you have some nice shouts/chants/echoes that help on the offensive such as GftE, Blazing Finale, etc and stuff. while on the defensive it's pretty obvious, command/motivation is mostly about defense. mostly partywide but also some char specific. and they have superior armor and a shield! the best thing about them is that you can do both roles with the same char. equip 2-3 spear skills(not neccessarily an elite) and the rest shouts/chants/echoes/whatever and if you hate spears so much you can always go with a different weapon, the same concept as the ranger thumpers... a popular and good example of that is the ToF tank who uses an axe and more specifically triple chop+cyclone axe with blazing finale and they're on fire to inflict massive burning on your foes and use it to defend your friends. as for the other options, the mesmer is more fit towards PvP even though it can do very well on PvE as well, but much less popular at that. while the ritualist is more fit towars PvE while can work on PvP in specific builds. if I were you I'd ask myself a few questions before making the decision: do I preffer another caster class or do I have enough of those? do I preffer a versatile character or a more narrow minded character that will enable me to achieve specific goals? do esthetics matter to me or the character skills/function is the only thing that matters? do I wish to do a lot of soloing in PvE or am I more of a group player? do I wish to use my character mainly for farming or perhaps become a PvP monster? |

I would try a ritualist, I have one of each character class, and In all honesty out of those three my ritualist is used waaay more often. In fact, she is my most played character. I have a channeling build, a resoration/healing build, a spirit spamming build, a spirit damage build, exc. I really enjoy playing on her.
Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy my mesmer and paragon, But I find the ritualist to be more enjoyable. |

I would keep a PvP slot, even if its just for RA. but if you are set on another character look at how much paragons and mesmers suck and realize that ritualist is your only option.

Take a Paragon.
In PvE you basically end up being a good leader because you help your mates and nearly never die. In PvP you end up being a good soft targets killer, and eventually a warrior killer. But if the enemies have a Mo or two you are pretty damn RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed, you should also beware of N, Me and D, because if they know what you are doing you will go down pretty fast, even if you have a monk. With the right skills and attributes you can: PvE (P/Mo); Deal ok damage and occasionally interrupt - cause bleeding, deep wound and make you and all your teammates cause burning for 2-3 seconds (amazing!) - make all your teammates gain 70-80hp when they use their next skill (a little healing is always good ) - with constant +3 health and 90 armor you are nearly never going to die - and finally you can rez with the Mo resurrection skill. PvP (P/W): Deal good damage and interrupt - cause bleeding, deep wound and make you and all your teammates cause burning for 2 seconds (amazing!) - with constant +4 health and 90 armor you arnt going to die that fast. |

I would make a ritualist. They have a kind of gameplay that is unlike the others. The paragon can be somewhat boring seeing as how its strength is in it's supportive skills. As for the mesmer, the fast casting simply isnt enough to warrant making a brand new character when you could just make a necro/mesmer and have about the same experience minus the batman masks and glitter.
The ritualist is a very good hybrid class and I think you'd enjoy at least one of the variants. There are restoration builds, solo farming builds, and all sorts of support, minion, and caster type options as well. |

The advise I will give you is seeing as how unpopular an Assassin is at times you might want to delete it to make a Rit or Mes.If I was going to make a char for both parts of the game it would definetly be a Mesmer as you don't see to manty Rits in PvP.Don't forget you still have all those Assassin skills unlocked on your account.I played a Rit as well and it was fun but I wasn't to happy with name or looks of it so I deleted it and may make another one up some day.
